King Abdulaziz Port sets record with 20,645 containers handled on single ship

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam is making significant strides in the maritime sector, marking a series of key developments:

  1. Record Container Handling: The port recently set a new record by managing 20,645 standard containers on the vessel Cosco Shipping Aquarius 036E. This milestone highlights the port's capacity and efficiency in handling large volumes of trade.

  2. Strategic Expansion: This achievement aligns with Saudi Arabia's National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which aims to position the Kingdom as a global logistics hub connecting three continents. The strategy emphasizes enhancing the Kingdom's role in international trade and logistics.

  3. Infrastructure Investments: The port is undergoing substantial infrastructure upgrades, including the addition of 21 coastal and bridge cranes, supported by a SR7 billion ($1.86 billion) investment from Saudi Global Ports Co., a Public Investment Fund subsidiary.

  4. Electric Trucks Contract: A landmark contract with Chinese company SANY will supply King Abdulaziz Port with 80 electric trucks, marking the largest single contract for such vehicles signed by SANY. This initiative is part of the port’s efforts to modernize and enhance its operational efficiency.

  5. Container Handling Records: The port has also achieved significant container handling records, including managing 292,612 standard containers in May, demonstrating its growing capacity and efficiency.

  6. New Shipping Service: In March, Mawani launched a new shipping service connecting Dammam to East Asia, including ports in China, South Korea, Malaysia, Oman, and the UAE. This service further integrates King Abdulaziz Port into global trade routes and strengthens its strategic position as the primary port on the Arabian Gulf.

  7. Connectivity and Logistics: King Abdulaziz Port’s role is crucial as it is linked to the Riyadh Dry Port by rail, making it a key transit point for goods to Saudi Arabia’s eastern and central regions. The port’s ongoing improvements and strategic services support the Kingdom’s goal of becoming a major player in international maritime transport and logistics.
