Saudi Pro League 2024-25: The best, the hopefuls and the rest

The 2024-25 Saudi Pro League season is finally here, and as excitement builds, fans are eager to see which teams will rise to the challenge and contend for the title. Here's a look at the top contenders, the hopefuls aiming to break into the upper echelons, and those battling to avoid relegation.

The Challengers

  1. Al-Hilal: The reigning champions are the team to beat. Despite no major signings, the return of Neymar from injury, likely next month, is eagerly anticipated. With a formidable attack led by Aleksandar Mitrovic, Neymar, Ruben Neves, and Salem Al-Dawsari, and a defense that conceded just 23 goals last season, Al-Hilal remains a powerhouse. Kalidou Koulibaly, who had a strong debut season, is determined to help the team maintain and even improve their defensive record. Coach Jorge Jesus, experienced in winning in Saudi Arabia, will ensure his team remains focused as they defend their title.

  2. Al-Nassr: Last season’s second-place finish was disappointing for a club with such high ambitions. Cristiano Ronaldo’s 35 league goals were impressive, but coach Luis Castro is under pressure to fix defensive issues, especially after a heavy 4-1 loss to Al-Hilal in the Saudi Super Cup. A strong start to the season will be crucial for Al-Nassr if they want to challenge for the title.

  3. Al-Ahli: After finishing third last season, Al-Ahli will be looking to push for the title. Riyad Mahrez remains a key player, but much will depend on whether Roberto Firmino can find his best form and whether Firas Al-Buraikan can continue scoring. The loss of Allan Saint-Maximin is a blow, but the team still boasts plenty of talent.

  4. Al-Ittihad: Last season was a disappointment for the defending champions, finishing fifth and losing key players like Karim Benzema to injury. With a new coach, Laurent Blanc, and significant changes to the squad, including the arrival of Moussa Diaby, Al-Ittihad will aim for a better showing this season.

The Hopefuls

  • Al-Taawoun: Fourth last season, they continue under the guidance of the experienced Brazilian coach Pericles Chamusca. They’ll aim to maintain or improve their position in the top four.

  • Al-Shabab: A poor season by their standards saw them lose Ivan Rakitic, but the addition of striker Abderrazak Hamdallah could provide the goals needed to challenge the top teams.

  • Ettifaq: Steven Gerrard’s team finished sixth last season. Any improvement this time would be a significant achievement given the stiff competition.

  • Al-Fateh & Al-Feiha: Both teams had solid seasons last year. Al-Fateh will need to cope with the loss of Firas Al-Buraikan, while Al-Feiha will look to Fashion Sakala to build on his promising debut.

  • Al-Qadsiah: The newly promoted team has been active in the transfer market, with high-profile signings like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Nacho. They could surprise many and are one to watch.

The Rest

  • Relegation Battle: Al-Okhdood, Al-Riyadh, and Al-Wehda narrowly avoided relegation last season, and they’ll be aiming to secure their top-flight status again. Newly promoted Al-Orobah and Al-Kholood, who signed veteran goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe from Al-Ittihad, will be satisfied with simply surviving the drop.

As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on these teams as they strive to achieve their goals in what promises to be another thrilling Saudi Pro League campaign.
