Ex-England defender Smalling signs with Saudi club Al-Fayha

Former England defender Chris Smalling has signed a two-year deal with Saudi Arabian club Al-Fayha, marking the end of his five-season tenure at AS Roma. The 34-year-old's move to Saudi Arabia is part of a broader trend, although the league has not attracted as many top international stars this year.

Smalling was an essential player for Roma, contributing significantly to their victory in the inaugural Europa Conference League in 2022. Over his career, he made 31 appearances for the England national team between 2011 and 2017.

In addition to Smalling's move, Roma also transferred 19-year-old Brazilian winger Joao Costa to Al-Ettifaq, another Saudi club, in a permanent deal. Costa had limited appearances for Roma, featuring only five times in Serie A and the Europa League.

While the Saudi league has seen major signings like Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar in recent years, this season has been quieter. Despite rumors of a potential move for Victor Osimhen, Al-Ahli instead secured Ivan Toney from Brentford on deadline day. Meanwhile, Osimhen is reportedly finalizing a loan move to Galatasaray.
