Facebook restricts war-related content in Palestinian territories, BBC investigation claims

A recent BBC investigation has found that Facebook has significantly restricted the reach of Palestinian news outlets during the Israel-Gaza conflict that began in October 2023. The research indicates that newsrooms in Gaza and the West Bank experienced a 77% decline in audience engagement—a key metric for content visibility and impact—following the onset of the conflict.

Meta, Facebook's parent company, has faced criticism for its content moderation practices, with allegations of bias against pro-Palestinian content. In 2022, a human rights report commissioned by Meta identified "unintentional bias" and other decisions that impacted "the rights of Palestinian users to freedom of expression."

In response to the recent findings, Meta stated that any implication of deliberate suppression of a particular voice is "unequivocally false." The company emphasized its commitment to providing a platform for people to use their voice while ensuring safety.

This development has intensified ongoing debates about the role of social media platforms in moderating content during conflicts and their impact on freedom of expression.
