Palestinian artist Salma Dib displays work at Etihad Modern Art Gallery

Palestinian Artist Salma Dib: A Journey of Art and Resilience

At just 24 years old, Palestinian artist Salma Dib has crafted a compelling narrative through her art, embodying resilience and introspection. Currently, her work is on display at the Etihad Modern Art Gallery in Abu Dhabi as part of the “Summer and Women” exhibition.

Artistic Vision

Salma Dib's ongoing series, “generational walls,” is a powerful exploration of political and personal themes. Her pieces incorporate building materials like cement, gravel, and sand on wooden panels, adorned with obscure Arabic writings. The stark, grey-toned visuals are inspired by graffiti seen on walls in Syria, Jordan, and Palestine. This choice of medium and message reflects a deep connection to the protest nature of these walls, where anonymity allows for unfiltered expression.

Dib describes her art as a form of healing and personal expression. “I think I found a part of myself in those walls,” she says, highlighting how her reserved nature has influenced her work. Her art represents a space where she can voice her thoughts and emotions.

Personal Journey

Dib's journey is marked by significant challenges and profound experiences. Born in Khan al-Shih, a Syrian refugee camp, she grew up in a family displaced by the Israeli occupation in 1948. Her grandfather's migration to Syria and the family's subsequent settlement shaped her early life. Despite the hardships, Dib fondly recalls her childhood on a farm, where her love for art began. Her family's artistic influence, including a treehouse built by her grandfather and an art studio run by her aunt and uncle, played a formative role in her development.

The family’s relocation to the UAE when Dib was five offered new opportunities, but the transition was not without its struggles. The loss of her mother at 15 deeply impacted her, making art a vital outlet for her emotions during a challenging period.

Educational and Professional Milestones

In 2018, Dib ventured to the US to study art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. This period marked a turning point in her career as she explored various artistic mediums, including textile art, ceramics, and neon signage. Encouraged by her teachers to push beyond her reserved nature, Dib embraced the challenge, expanding her artistic expression.
