Obsess, a Kuwaiti psychological horror series directed by Lebanese filmmaker Said El-Marouk and starring Saudi actor Yaqoub Alfarhan and Kuwaiti actress Haya Abdel Salam, premieres exclusively on Netflix on Friday, October 30, 2026, according to the streamer’s official title page, Arab News and The New Arab.
A homecoming that turns sinister
Known in Arabic as Al-Nafs Al-Mutma’inna, the series follows a man who returns to Kuwait after his father’s death and is drawn back into what Netflix describes as a dangerous, obsessive relationship. In the version of the story outlined by Arab News, Alfarhan plays Talal, who comes home with his wife, Mona, and remains haunted by his past with Hessa, played by Abdel Salam. As the couple settles in, they begin to experience disturbing events that appear to be supernatural.
Netflix classifies the show as horror, with tags for TV thrillers and Kuwaiti and Middle Eastern series, and has given it a TV-14 rating. The New Arab reports that the platform describes the tone as “ominous, psychological and suspenseful,” with a story that blends psychological horror with demonic themes and explores desire and guilt. The two outlets differ on the exact period: Arab News places the story in 1970s Kuwait, while The New Arab refers to the 1980s.
Cast and creative team
Beyond its two leads, the ensemble listed by Netflix includes Lebanese actress Layla Abdallah, Hussein Al-Mansour, Asmahan Tawfiq, Ibrahim Al-Harbi, Ghada AlMulla, Hussain Al-Haddad, Abdullah AlBloushi and Sara Salah. Arab News credits the screenplay to writer Eyad Saleh. Netflix has not published an episode count on the title page, which refers to a first season.
Speaking to Arab News, El-Marouk said the series is built around romance before it turns dark. “The foundation of ‘Obsess’ is a love story. Everything begins with love,” he said. Alfarhan described his character’s arc in terms of consequences: “Sometimes we make decisions that seem very simple or ordinary at the time.” Abdel Salam told the newspaper she spent more than a year preparing for the role, which she said “required a great deal of personal and psychological sacrifice.”
A rare genre for Arab television
Horror remains relatively uncommon in Arab television, where drama, comedy and romance dominate, The New Arab notes. The region’s genre efforts have mostly come from cinema, including Egyptian films such as Al-Ins wal-Jinn and Al-Ta’weeza and the Tunisian feature Dachra (2018).
Netflix’s own track record in the genre goes back to Jinn, the 2019 Jordanian series set in Petra that was the platform’s first Arabic-language original from the Middle East and drew controversy in Jordan at the time. The streamer has since invested in Gulf productions, including the Kuwaiti romantic comedy Honeymoonish in 2024. Obsess extends that Kuwaiti slate into horror.
The release is timed for Halloween. The New Arab reports that Obsess is part of a seasonal Netflix line-up that also includes Below, Haunted Hotel and Balaraw: Blood Island.
